Red Cliffs has you covered this weekend!

Red Cliffs has you covered this Sunday (3/11) with the running of the Historical Train Railway as well as the Country Market.

Harry the Diesel powered Loco makes a return as we enter the warmer months and Lukee the Steam Powered Loco has a well earned rest due to the fire restrictions that are now in place.

The first ride on Harry will be 10am and the last being at 2pm. The ride takes you down the Werrimull Road, passing grape vines in an open air carriage before witnessing the unique turn table in operation that sends you back to the station.

The railway is run by a dedicated bunch of volunteers and they are always on the look out for more, so this is a great opportunity to go for a ride and then have a chat with on of the drivers or crew and see if you have any skills to offer. A video of the experience is below.

Whilst you're in Red Cliffs, be sure to visit the Country Market. This is a massive market that again is run by volunteers and is also a great place to grab lunch and if you're keen take a short drive to the Red  Cliffs Lookout (map below)

The approximately 2,700KM long Murray River is diverse and one of the longest navigable rivers in the world.

From its beginning in the mountain ranges with unique flora and fauna to the wide sweeping beaches through the Mallee region and then as the it makes its way to the South Australian mouth, the Murray River changes its look and feel every step of the way.

It's home to some unique species, non more famous than the magnificent Murray Cod, which can be found on its entire length.

The Murray River is the life blood of the town's that sit along its banks and provides life to crops and
valuable income  from tourism. the river is host to a number of activities from fishing and yabbying, boating, camping, bushwalking and much more. 

Locals have a unique connection to the river, but many visitors also draw a connection and find themselves returning time after time.

Lights for Lock Island

Mildura is on the cusp of welcoming an exciting new attraction: the proposed Field of Lights on Mildura's Lock Island.

This stunning outdoor art installation, designed by renowned artist Bruce Munro, promises to transform Lock Island into a mesmerizing display of light and colour, captivating both locals and visitors alike.

Opening sometime in 2025 it will consist of 12,550 illuminated "firefly's", 502 Pods and Projectors as well as Solar Panels to power it all.

The flickering lights will light the walking tracks around the Island for a truly mesmerizing experience.

The location is spot on, and at this stage we can only imagine the beauty of walking through the Island on a warm summers evening. 

This will no doubt quickly become a tourist "must see" and further extends the river front development further east. It's easily walking distance from Feast Street as well as Café 1909 (also located on the river front.

The installation will also compliment the similar display at Wentworth's Perry Sand Hill's (story to come)

A Big Night of Racing at Timmis this Saturday

The Knox Fabrication Mildura Modified Series kicks off this weekend at Mildura’s B&S Earthworks Timmis Speedway with 15 drivers for its opening round including current Victorian Champion Brad Wicks.

The Mildura series which consists of three rounds with the winner of each round taking home $1000 in prize money will no doubt draw some visiting drivers as they prepare their cars for the Australian Title which will be held at the Mildura Speedway over Easter.

Modified Sedan racing is known as an exciting forms of speedway sedan racing and the action this weekend will be just a taste of what's to come over Easter.

As well as the Modifieds, there is almost 20 Formula 500's nominated, 14 Junior Formula 500's, 24 Wingless Sprints, 12 Lightning Sprints, and Junior Sedans.

The Facility is fully catered with plenty of food and drink as well as a licenced booth for something a little harder.

The forecast temperature for saturday currently sits at 27 degrees, so its perfect conditions for both the competitors as well as the spectators.

Hot Rod Heaven This Weekend!

 The Desert City Rodders will celebrate their 50th Birthday this week end at the 37th running of the Goanna Run.

The Club was formed in 1974 by Hot Rod enthusiasts Ian Wallace, Jennifer Wallace, Gary Surman, Graham Blaby and Henry McClure.

Since that time, the club has been a feature at many of Sunraysia's local events with their members showcasing the unique cars, but the Goanna Run is one of their own (events).

Apart from the club drive day or cruz that show off the regions locations to visiting Hot Rodders, The "Run", has encapsulated what it means to live in Mildura. The region gravitates to their annual street party and display, as well as the "morning after" show and shine on River Front.

The street party closes the City Heart's Feast Street on Langtree to traffic to allow for the display of Hot Rod's and live entertainment.

Alfresco dining really brings the event alive in what is one of the best months to travel to Sunraysia. This years Street Party will be held on Saturday, (see video below of the 2023 event).

The Sunday "recovery" day on the banks of the Murray River also provides live entertainment, a massive "Show and Shine", and breakfast on the lawns with the magnificent Murray as a backdrop.

Parma Review #3 - The Mildura Working Mans Club

 

The Mildura Working Mans Club was once the home to the longest Bar in the world, but that's not what we are here for.

The $22 Pot and Parma! ($20 if you're a member) This one takes the cake in what has only a short journey so far so lets not get ahead of ourselves.

The Bistro at the Workers is a reasonable size and can turn meals out quicky, on this particular evening we arrived quite early and were suprised that they were serving meals before 6pm.

There was a good number of Tourists in this evening, which I'm sure is quite normal given its long standing history in Mildura and its location.

But, lets get onto the Parma!

This one was a ripper, a reasonable size chicken snitzel (nothing over the top), but we have Ham back! and a tasty topping with cheese melted perfectly on top, a big thumbs up for that.

The chips were a good serve, and by now you would be aware of my hate of Chips placed under the Snitzel, this was a bit half and half and the fact that they were crisp and dusted in a nice chicken salt we will let them off the hook.

The Salad had a good variety of ingredients, but lacked ever so slighty with the dressing.

No Bread Roll again, but I may have missed that when I was ordering at the counter.

Over all the Parma wasnt as big as the previous ones Ive had, but it still filled me up and I much perfer quaility of Quantity.

Speedway back on track for the 2024 Season

 B&S Earthworks Timmis Speedways season opening meeting this Saturday will feature round one of the WK Posi Track and Excavation Hire Southern Street Stock Series with over 20 competing teams.

The prize pool for round one is over $4000 which has gained the drivers interest.

The newly upgraded speedway will also showcase Modified Sedans, Junior Sedans, Wingless Sprints and Vintage Heavy Weight Hot Rods.

Racing will start at 6pm, but make sure you're there early to grab a prime seating location, with a link to tickets below. 

As is always the case with Timmis Speedway, there will be plenty of food and drink vans onsite as well as booth for something a little harder.

Parma Review #2 - Verde @ The Gateway

 

Verde was the natural next stop for the Parma review, considering the Gateway's long-standing popularity in Mildura.

Verde is a relatively new addition to the Gateway that came about following the pub's extensive redevelopment and massive transformation after Covid. It's a (semi) outdoor bar and dining space that attracts a diverse clientele. It's a favorite spot for locals to have after-work drinks, and some choose to stay for a meal in the evening. It's also a great place to meet up with friends for drinks and a meal. I was there on a Wednesday night with a friend who was visiting our region.

"The topping on this chicken dish was basic, with no ham, and may have been slightly overcooked, especially the cheese. Nevertheless, it was still tasty. The chips were again placed underneath the schnitzel, which, as you may recall from my last review, is a pet peeve of mine. However, they were tasty and dusted with some sort of seasoning that I can't quite identify - a win for the chips. The salad was served in a bowl on the side of the plate. The addition of olives in the salad was a big plus for me, and the large cherry tomatoes were also full and juicy - a win for the salad.

There was no bread roll this time, which was a bit disappointing. We also waited a reasonable amount of time for our meals. This may have been due to the main dining room being busy, but I'm not entirely sure. At $32.50, I would have expected a little better. Nonetheless, it was a great night. If I had one suggestion, it would be to reduce the amount of chips and add some ham to the topping."

Rio Vista House was originally constructed for the  Chaffey brothers, who played a pivotal role in the irrigation and agricultural development of the area.
