His story, though ends with tragedy, is a testament to the power of resilience and innovation.

By improving packaging methods, De Garis played a crucial role in helping Mildura’s produce reach markets far and wide, boosting the region’s reputation for quality dried fruits. The original Sarnia packaging shed stood where Sarnia Avenue is now and adjacent to the old Mildura Primary School.

The paper was a bold endeavor, reflecting De Garis’s commitment to informed and engaged citizens. Through the Sunraysia Daily, he sought to amplify the voices of the local community and champion causes close to his heart.

Local Legends: G.B. “Ben” Eggleton – Keeper of the Kulkyne

Sunraysia has been home to many fascinating figures over the years, but few have left a legacy as enduring and intertwined with the natural world as G.B. Eggleton, affectionately known as Ben Eggleton. An author, park ranger, and passionate conservationist, Ben's life was a testament to his love for the bush and the stories it holds.

From Humble Beginnings

Ben Eggleton was born (to the best of our knowledge) on May 13, 1923, in the small town of Walpeup, nestled in Victoria’s Mallee region. His formative years in this arid landscape sparked a deep connection to the land, one that would shape his life’s work. Ben’s childhood was spent exploring the scrubby plains and learning the rhythms of nature—a foundation that would later inspire his career and writings.

The Call of the Kulkyne

Ben Eggleton’s name became synonymous with the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park, where he served as a park ranger for many years. Situated about 70 kilometers south of Mildura, the park is a haven of ancient red gums, serene lakes, and unique Mallee vegetation. Ben's time at Hattah-Kulkyne was marked by his unparalleled knowledge of its flora, fauna, and indigenous heritage.

Whether he was sharing stories of the mighty Murray Cod or guiding visitors through the park’s labyrinth of sand dunes, Ben brought the Kulkyne to life for everyone he met. His stewardship played a pivotal role in preserving the natural beauty of this cherished landscape.

A Voice for the Bush

Ben Eggleton’s love for the bush found its ultimate expression in his writings. His books, Call of the KulkyneThese Bare Hands, These Little Trees, Last of the Lantern Swingers and many more are all vivid tributes to the Mallee and its resilient inhabitants—human and non-human alike.

Call of the Kulkyne captures the essence of life in the region, combining Ben’s firsthand experiences with an evocative sense of place. In These Bare Hands, he recounts tales of grit, determination, and resourcefulness, painting a picture of a time when survival in the bush required ingenuity and courage.

Through his storytelling, Ben not only preserved the history and culture of the Mallee but also inspired a deeper appreciation for its fragile ecosystem. His words continue to resonate with readers, offering a timeless reminder of the importance of living in harmony with nature.

A Life Well Lived

Ben Eggleton passed away in the early 2000's,  While he spent his later years far from the Mallee, his heart always remained with the Kulkyne. His legacy lives on through his writings, the memories of those who knew him, and the thriving national park he once called home.

Celebrating a Legend

Ben Eggleton’s life is a story of passion, dedication, and a profound connection to the natural world. For those of us lucky enough to explore the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park, we owe a debt of gratitude to this local legend who devoted his life to its protection and celebration.

If you haven’t yet picked up a copy of Call of the Kulkyne or These Bare Hands, you’re missing out on a piece of Sunraysia’s rich heritage. Let’s keep Ben’s spirit alive by cherishing the land he loved so dearly and passing on his stories to future generations.

Local Legends: W.B. Chaffey - Mildura's Founding Father

Mildura’s history is woven with the vision and determination of pioneers, and among the most influential is William Benjamin (W.B.) Chaffey. As one of the architects behind the establishment of Mildura, Chaffey’s story is one of ambition, resilience, and lasting impact.

Early Life and Ambition

W.B. Chaffey was born in Brockville, Ontario, Canada, in 1856. Raised in a family of entrepreneurs, he developed a strong work ethic and an aptitude for engineering and irrigation, skills that would later define his career. Alongside his brother George, W.B. became involved in irrigation projects in California, where they earned a reputation for innovation and success.

The Journey to Mildura

The Chaffey brothers’ expertise caught the attention of Alfred Deakin, then a young politician passionate about Australia’s potential for agricultural expansion. In 1886, Deakin invited the brothers to establish an irrigation colony in the arid Sunraysia region of Victoria. Intrigued by the opportunity, W.B. and George Chaffey accepted the challenge and embarked on a journey to transform the region’s landscape.

Challenges and Setbacks

Settling in Mildura, W.B. faced significant obstacles. The harsh Australian climate, combined with the challenges of adapting irrigation techniques to local conditions, tested his resolve. Early settlers grappled with financial difficulties, crop failures, and scepticism from those who doubted the viability of the project.

The financial strain peaked during the economic depression of the 1890s. The Chaffey brothers’ ambitious irrigation schemes required substantial investment, and when funding ran out, the dream nearly collapsed. W.B. Chaffey faced the prospect of losing everything, including his personal wealth and reputation.

Rio Vista and a Vision Restored

Amid these challenges, W.B. began building Rio Vista in 1889, a magnificent homestead overlooking the Murray River. The house, completed in 1892, reflected his optimism and belief in the region’s potential. Rio Vista became a symbol of resilience and determination, standing as a beacon of hope during the most trying times.

Though financial troubles forced George to return to the United States, W.B. remained steadfast in Mildura. He reorganized operations, rebuilt trust with settlers, and eventually saw the irrigation colony stabilize and thrive. His unwavering commitment laid the groundwork for Mildura’s transformation into a flourishing agricultural hub.

W.B. was elected president of the Mildura Shire Council in 1903 and became mayor in 1920.

A Lasting Legacy

W.B. Chaffey’s contributions to Sunraysia extend far beyond irrigation. His vision and perseverance brought life to a region once considered uninhabitable. The irrigation systems he and his team implemented enabled the cultivation of grapes, citrus, and other crops, turning Mildura into one of Australia’s most productive agricultural regions.

Today, Rio Vista stands as a cherished historical landmark, offering a glimpse into the life and times of W.B. Chaffey. The homestead, now part of Mildura Arts Centre, serves as a reminder of his enduring legacy and the indomitable spirit of the early settlers.

A Pioneer Remembered

W.B. Chaffey’s story is one of determination, innovation, and an unwavering belief in the power of community and vision. His efforts not only shaped the Sunraysia region but also set an example of resilience in the face of adversity. Mildura’s thriving vineyards, orchards, and vibrant community owe much to this Local Legend, whose legacy continues to inspire.

The "can do" attitude of W.B. still resonates strong in Sunraysia.

Made in Mildura - Murray River Salt : A local Treasure

At Out and About Sunrayisa, we take immense pride in celebrating the wonders of our region, and one shining gem is Murray River Salt. A quintessential product of the Murray-Darling Basin, this premium salt is more than just a seasoning—it's a story of sustainability, heritage, and exceptional quality.

The Heart of Hattah: Where It All Began

Murray River Salt was born out of innovation and necessity in the small Victorian town of Hattah. Known for its picturesque red gum forests and stunning wetlands, Hattah offered the perfect foundation for this remarkable enterprise. The business began as a family initiative, driven by a vision to transform the challenges of our unique Australian environment into a thriving operation.

The salt is sourced from ancient saline aquifers deep beneath the Murray-Darling Basin. This region's underground waters, which have accumulated minerals over millennia, are naturally rich in essential nutrients, giving the salt its signature flavor and pink hue.

A Unique Process for a Unique Product

What sets Murray River Salt apart is its artisanal harvesting process. Brine is carefully extracted from the aquifers and then gently evaporated using natural solar energy. The result? Delicate salt flakes with a light, fluffy texture that dissolve easily and enhance any dish. This process not only creates an exceptional product but also contributes to reducing salinity in the Murray-Darling Basin, supporting the local ecosystem.

The soft pink hue of the salt flakes is a hallmark of its purity, stemming from naturally occurring minerals such as magnesium and calcium. Unlike processed table salts, Murray River Salt is unrefined, retaining its natural goodness while providing a subtle, balanced taste.

A Culinary Staple

Murray River Salt is a favorite among chefs and home cooks alike. Its delicate texture and nuanced
flavor make it an ideal finishing salt. Sprinkle it over a fresh salad, roasted vegetables, or a perfectly seared steak to elevate your meal. It’s equally at home in sweet dishes, adding a delightful contrast to caramels and chocolates. The versatility of this salt makes it a must-have in any kitchen.

For the adventurous foodie, try incorporating it into homemade spice blends, curing meats, or even rimming cocktail glasses. The possibilities are endless, and the results are always impressive.

A Family Legacy of Quality and Care

Behind the success of Murray River Salt is a passionate family business. What began as a small operation in Hattah has grown into a symbol of regional pride, yet it remains rooted in its community and committed to sustainable practices. By harnessing the natural resources of our region, Murray River Salt exemplifies how innovation and tradition can coexist to create something extraordinary.

The family’s dedication to quality is evident in every flake of salt they produce. Their commitment to sustainability ensures that future generations can continue to enjoy the benefits of this unique resource.
