This month, our “Local Legends” feature shines a spotlight on none other than Dale Weightman, a sporting icon affectionately known as “The Flea.” From his humble beginnings in Sunraysia to his remarkable AFL career and ongoing contributions to the community, Dale’s story is one of perseverance, talent, and heart.

Early Days in Sunraysia

Dale Weightman was born and raised in the Sunraysia region, where his passion for Australian Rules Football began to blossom. As a child, Dale spent countless hours kicking the footy around with friends and family, honing his skills and developing the determination that would define his career. His talent was evident from a young age, and he quickly became a standout player in junior football leagues. Playing for Imperials, Dale’s natural ability and leadership qualities made him a force to be reckoned with on the field.

The Journey to Richmond

It didn’t take long for Dale’s talent to catch the attention of AFL recruiters. In 1978, he was drafted to the Richmond Tigers, marking the start of an illustrious career in the top tier of Australian Rules Football.
