Made in Mildura - Mildara, fit for the Quenn

Queen Elizabeth viewing Mildara Sherry in 1954

Mildara Blass, a cornerstone of Australia's rich viticultural heritage, traces its roots back to 1888 when it was founded by William Benjamin Chaffey and established in Merbein.

The site initially focused on producing sherry and brandy, with its first vintage released in 1891.  By 1937, the "Mildara" brand name was officially adopted.

In the 1950s, under the leadership of winemaker Ron Haselgrove, Mildara expanded into red table wines, marking a significant shift from its fortified wine origins. This evolution continued with the acquisition of a vineyard in Coonawarra in 1955, leading to the establishment of a winery there by 1973. The Coonawarra wines eventually became Mildara's flagship reds.

The 1980s and 1990s were marked by strategic acquisitions, including the purchase of Wolf Blass Wines in 1991. This expansion culminated in the formation of Mildara Blass. In 1996, Foster's Brewing Group acquired Mildara Blass, integrating it into its portfolio. Subsequently, in 2000, Mildara Blass merged with California's Beringer Wine Estates to form Beringer Blass Wine Estates.

Today, the legacy of Mildara Wines continues under the umbrella of Treasury Wine Estates, a global leader in the wine industry.

Throughout its history, Mildara has been associated with numerous brands, including Jamieson's Run, Annie's Lane, and Black Opal. The company has produced a diverse range of wines, from premium reds and whites to sparkling ranges. While specific employment figures are not readily available, the company's extensive operations have contributed significantly to the Australian wine industry.

Mildara Wines' journey from a regional sherry producer to a key player in the global wine market exemplifies the dynamic evolution of Australia's wine industry.

Made in Mildura: Spotlight on Mildura Fruit Company

When you think of Sunraysia, the mind instantly conjures up images of golden citrus groves, endless vineyards, and a community rooted in the rich soil of the region. At the heart of this bounty lies the Mildura Fruit Company (MFC), a cornerstone of the local agricultural industry and a shining example of what makes Mildura special. From its rich history to its forward-thinking practices, MFC is more than just a fruit packaging business — it’s a symbol of regional pride and global excellence.

A Legacy of Quality

Founded in 1904, as the Mildura Co-Operative Fruit Company, MFC has grown alongside the Sunraysia region, building a reputation as one of Australia’s leading citrus packers and exporters. For over a century, MFC has been a trusted partner for local growers, providing them with the means to share their produce with the world. Over time, the company has expanded its operations while maintaining a steadfast commitment to quality and sustainability.

Fruit of the Region

MFC specializes in citrus fruits, including Navel Oranges, Valencia Oranges, Mandarins and Lemons. These fruits are renowned for their vibrant flavor, juiciness, and quality—all thanks to the Sunraysia region’s ideal growing conditions. The combination of rich, well-drained soils, a Mediterranean climate, and plenty of sunshine ensures that every piece of fruit MFC handles is of the highest standard.

The Growers: The Heart of MFC

MFC’s success is deeply intertwined with its network of dedicated local growers. Over 120 growers from across the Sunraysia region supply fruit to the company, each bringing generations of expertise and care to their craft. These growers work tirelessly to produce premium citrus that reflects the unique characteristics of the region. MFC provides them with support, resources, and a connection to global markets, creating a partnership that’s as fruitful as the produce itself.

Global Reach

From its headquarters in Mildura, MFC’s reach extends far beyond the borders of Australia. The
company exports citrus to over 30 countries, including markets in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America. Their fruit graces the shelves of international supermarkets and markets, proudly showcasing the Sunraysia name on a global stage. MFC’s commitment to quality ensures that international buyers and consumers consistently choose their fruit over competitors.

Providing Local Jobs

MFC is not only a key player in the agricultural sector but also a significant employer in the Mildura region. The company can employ in peak operation up to 300 people, providing jobs in roles ranging from fruit sorting and packing to quality control and logistics. This makes MFC a vital part of the local economy, supporting families and fostering a sense of community.

The Journey from Orchard to Market

The process of preparing fruit at MFC is a meticulous one, designed to ensure only the best citrus reaches consumers. Once the fruit arrives from the growers, it undergoes a series of steps, including washing, grading, and sorting. Advanced technology is used to inspect each piece of fruit for quality, size, and color. Only the best fruit is then packed and shipped to its destination. The entire process is designed to maintain freshness and flavor, so customers can enjoy Sunraysia’s finest no matter where they are in the world.

Rooted in the Region

MFC’s connection to the Mildura region goes beyond business. The company is deeply committed to supporting the local community and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Sunraysia’s agricultural heritage. Through initiatives such as water efficiency programs, grower support, and community engagement, MFC is investing in the future of the region.

A Bright Future

As MFC continues to grow and evolve, one thing remains constant: its dedication to showcasing the best of Mildura to the world. By combining tradition, innovation, and a deep connection to the land and its people, MFC is a shining example of what makes the Sunraysia region so special.

So next time you see a Sunraysia citrus fruit in your local store, take a moment to appreciate the journey it’s been on—from the orchards of Mildura to your table, with care, quality, and pride every step of the way.
